Environment

In 1995, the County of Colchester began the challenge of achieving a 50% waste diversion before the year 2000 as mandated by the Province's Environment and Labour. The County has now become a leader in the management of solid waste issues and is a major reason why Nova Scotia was the first province in Canada to obtain the 50% mark.

The Truro:::Colchester region is also place consisting of fertile farmlands, mixed forests, fine sandy beaches to the north, and pebble beaches overlooking the highest tides in the world in the west.

In between, a defining feature of our environment comes from the beautiful Cobequid Mountains. They slice through Colchester and create a northern shoreline that hugs sandy soil hosting a climate that’s warm enough for growing grapes.

On the southern slopes of the Cobequid Mountain range, Colchester’s hillsides of shallow soil create an environment that has proven itself for decades as the world’s most productive blueberry growing area.
